Apple announced today that it's latest iPhone, the iPhone 3GS, has topped the 1 million units sold mark as of Sunday, matching it's iPhone 3G debut last year.

Apple announced today that it’s latest iPhone, the iPhone 3GS, has topped the 1 million units sold mark as of Sunday, matching it’s iPhone 3G debut last year.

“Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.
“With over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store,
iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.”

What Apple has failed to mention is how many of the older iPhone 3G at the $99 price point were sold. Even if numbers were half as good as the 3GS, this could mark one of the most successful Apple product launches ever.

In addition, Apple has also announced that the iPhone 3.0 software, available to all iPhone users, was downloaded more than 6 million times. The new software features tethering, MMS and copy and paste functionality.

In just a couple hours (10:00 AM Pacific, 1:00 PM Eastern) Apple Computer will be hosting their annual Worldwide Develops Conference in San Francisco. Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing, Phil Schiller, will kick-off the event with a keynote where he is expected to talk about Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and the rumored new iPhone Video.

Many sources have provided speculative photos and information on what we can expect. Below is a summary.

Photos of the new iPhone?

This photo originally appeared on NoWhereElse.fr and although their authenticity is questionable, they are true to the rumored Matte finish and black bezel (replacing the sliver bezel of the original iPhone and iPhone 3G)

Macrumors.com has provided a good summary of what is expected in the new iPhone based on reports from various websites. The list includes:

- Magnetometer
- Auto Focus Camera
- Video (and possibly video editing software)
- 4GB to 32GB capacity
- 7.2 Mbps 3G from AT&T

Other possibilities include better battery life, a faster processor and an FM transmitter.

You can follow the keynote address live at various sites including: Macrumors, Engadget, and Gizmodo.
